Railway Metrics and Dynamics Wins Procurement for Precision Positioning Service for the Swedish Transport Administration

Railway Metrics and Dynamics has won the Swedish Transport Administration’s (Trafikverket) procurement for a precision positioning service for railway vehicles. Trafikverket estimates the framework agreement’s value at SEK 10.5 million per year in rental revenues.

“We are very pleased with the decision. It strengthens our market position and will contribute to safer railway operations,” says Jan Lindqvist, CEO of Railway Metrics and Dynamics.

RMD’s product, the Performance Monitoring Unit (PMU), is well suited for the task of providing reliable information on a train’s geographic position.

Trafikverket and Swedish Emergeny Services (SOS Alarm) cooperate to ensure fast and accurate responses to incidents affecting railway traffic. During rescue operations, Trafikverket provides map services, road names, and GPS positions to help emergency resources reach the site quickly. Safety is also improved in the event of wildlife collisions and, in the future, at unmanned level crossings.

Integrated RTK-GPS for Real-Time Positioning

The solution is based on the Performance Monitoring Unit, integrated with RTK-GPS—the next level of precision in geographic measurements. The units will be installed in locomotives throughout Sweden and will continuously transmit precision and position data to Trafikverket’s internal systems.

A Complete Solution as a Service

Railway Metrics and Dynamics will deliver the entire solution as a service, including product, installation, communication, management, and support.

“The complete solution we offer combines high technical performance with easy installation. We look forward to delivering both hardware and software,” says Jan Lindqvist.

Contract Period of Three Years with Extension Option

A framework agreement is now expected, allowing train operators and other vehicle owners to call off the service. The agreement will be valid from the signing date until December 31, 2030. The client has the option to unilaterally extend the contract under existing terms until December 31, 2032.

The assignment is based on railway companies leasing one PMU for each locomotive used in service, and Trafikverket initially estimates the order value at approximately SEK 10.5 million per year in rental revenues.

We are very pleased with the decision. It strengthens our market position and will contribute to safer railway operations.
