Railway Metrics and Dynamics Receives Order for 25 PMU Units and 2 PMU:C Units for Testing on Established Freight Rail Line
Railway Metrics and Dynamics has recently received an order for 25 Performance Monitoring Units (PMUs) and 2 PMU:C units to be used for testing on an established rail line within Swedish rail-based freight traffic.
The test is a paid assignment aimed at examining wagon behavior during operation, with a particular focus on acceleration and braking. The results may, among other things, be used to assess transport safety.
PMU – An Advanced Unit for Real-Time Monitoring
PMU is an advanced unit for real-time monitoring of railway vehicles and infrastructure. It continuously measures vibrations, position, and other sensor data to detect wheel flats, instability, and component failures. Through AI-driven analysis, deviations are identified at an early stage, enabling predictive maintenance, increased safety, and reduced operational disruptions.
The system provides immediate alerts in the event of critical incidents such as derailments and transmits data to cloud services for further analysis and visualization. By replacing today’s manual and reactive methods with continuous monitoring directly from rolling stock, costs are reduced, punctuality improves, and the service life of vehicles is extended.
PMU:C – A GPS-Based Positioning Solution
The GPS-based positioning solution PMU:C provides the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) with a continuous real-time overview of train positions by combining satellite positioning with predictive calculations to compensate for signal loss, for example in tunnels.
By recording position, speed, and movement patterns, the system can provide early indications of track settlement and other infrastructure issues, while also improving incident management and capacity utilization. The product also measures comfort indices and enables real-time monitoring of passenger comfort levels.
Information is transmitted directly to Trafikverket’s systems and is also shared with SOS Alarm and emergency services to enable faster response in the event of accidents. The service includes remote monitoring, automatic updates, and alarm management, ensuring high availability and reducing the need for manual work.
