Real-time monitoring of position, movement, comfort and track deviation in a single device.

PMU:C is a sensor for precision positioning of trains, compliant with the Swedish Transport Administration’s (Trafikverket) standards. It enables monitoring of ride index, speed, direction, early detection of track issues, and faster emergency response by allowing the user to share location data directly with SOS Alarm.

How does the PMU:C work?

The solution is an end-to-end service that provides the user with reliable and continuous train positioning. The PMU:C is installed in the locomotive and collects data on position, speed, direction, and movement.

PMU:C enables identification of abnormal movement patterns, which may indicate track subsidence or other irregularities, allowing early detection of infrastructure issues.

The device uses satellite positioning combined with predictive calculations to maintain accurate location tracking even in tunnels or other environments with limited signal reception. Data is transmitted in real time directly to the users receiving service.

The service includes operational monitoring, remote configuration, software updates, and alarm management to ensure high availability.

Problem Addressed

The Swedish railway system lacks a unified and reliable real-time positioning standard for trains, which complicates traffic management, disruption handling, and safety operations.

Many vehicles report irregularly or with insufficient precision, and satellite reception may be unreliable—for example in tunnels—resulting in gaps in situational awareness. This leads to delays, inefficient capacity utilization, and increased risk during incidents.

At the same time, subsidence and other track faults are often detected too late, which can cause service interruptions or stalled passenger trains.

The proposed solution establishes a common, operationally reliable positioning standard with predictive tracking during signal loss, detection of movement patterns indicating track issues, and direct communication with SOS Alarm for faster emergency response.

Expected Benefits

The solution provides the user with a significantly more stable, detailed, and real-time overview of the entire railway network. Continuous and predictive positioning—even in environments such as tunnels where satellite signals are unavailable—enables faster and more precise response to disruptions.

By identifying movement patterns that indicate subsidence or other track deviations, PMU:C supports proactive maintenance planning, reducing the risk of service interruptions and stalled trains.

The device is e.g. used by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), and the direct contact with SOS Alarm shortens response times during accidents and enhances operational safety.

In addition, remote monitoring, automatic updates, and high service availability reduce manual work and enable more cost-efficient and robust infrastructure operations.

Overall, the solution improves punctuality, increases safety, and optimizes resource utilization—resulting in a more resilient railway system.
