Railway Metrics and Dynamics Leases 24 Performance Monitoring Units and 2 PMU:C to Green Cargo
Green Cargo is now installing 24 Performance Monitoring Units (PMUs) and 2 PMU:C units from Railway Metrics and Dynamics (RMD) for data collection and testing purposes. The sensors will be used in trials on particularly heavy freight trains, and as part of the project, Green Cargo will also gain access to RMD’s analytics platform.
The test is a paid assignment aimed at investigating how freight wagons behave during operation. The focus is on acceleration and braking, and the results can be used to assess safety, ride dynamics, energy efficiency, and transport punctuality.
“For us, this test is about gaining a deeper understanding of how wagons behave in real traffic conditions. With better data, we can identify patterns that are otherwise difficult to detect and use these insights to develop more reliable, efficient, and robust freight transport solutions. This strengthens our ability to deliver the quality, punctuality, and predictability that our customers’ logistics operations require,” says Stephan Ray, Head of Communications at Green Cargo.
PMU – An Advanced Real-Time Monitoring Device
The PMU is an advanced real-time monitoring device for railway vehicles and infrastructure. It continuously measures vibrations, position, and other sensor data to detect wheel flats, instability, track defects, and component failures. Through AI-driven analytics, anomalies are identified at an early stage, enabling predictive maintenance, improved safety, and reduced operational disruptions.
The system immediately alerts operators to critical events such as derailments and transmits data to cloud-based services for further analysis and visualization.
By replacing today’s manual and reactive methods with continuous monitoring directly from rolling stock, costs can be reduced, punctuality improved, and the service life of both vehicles and infrastructure extended. The solution is designed for railway operators, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), and maintenance contractors that require robust and reliable operations.
PMU:C – A GPS-Based Positioning Solution
The GPS-based positioning solution PMU:C provides a reliable and continuous real-time view of train locations by combining satellite positioning with predictive calculations that compensate for signal loss, for example in tunnels.
By recording position, speed, and movement patterns, the system can help identify track subsidence and other infrastructure issues at an early stage, while also improving disruption management and network capacity utilization. Information is transmitted directly to Trafikverket’s systems and shared with SOS Alarm to support faster emergency response in the event of accidents.
The service includes remote monitoring, automatic updates, and alarm management, ensuring high availability while reducing manual workload. Together, these capabilities create a unified positioning standard that enhances safety, punctuality, and efficiency across the railway system, delivering value to Trafikverket, operators, and maintenance providers alike.
