What is your background, and what does your role at RMD look like today?

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s degree in IT & Management from Linköping University. After graduating, I worked as a consultant at Capgemini, where I took on roles such as business consultant and project manager.

In February 2026, I joined RMD as a Technical Sales and Project Manager. My role largely involves customer interaction, as well as identifying and engaging potential future clients. I also conduct numerous product demonstrations, present the company and our solutions in various railway industry forums, and work closely with our CEO, Jan Lindqvist, on matters related to strategy, market positioning, and how we best bring our products to market.

In addition, I serve as project manager for our collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) regarding PMU:C, following RMD’s successful bid and framework agreement in autumn 2025.


How do you assess the current market situation for our solutions? What factors are driving demand?

RMD is very well positioned in the current market. There is significant demand for these types of solutions among both railway operators and infrastructure owners. In an industry where much of the rolling stock and infrastructure has a long technical lifespan—while requirements for availability, punctuality, and cost efficiency continue to increase—reliable data is becoming increasingly important.

For example, just today, three customers reached out requesting quotations for different solutions. We have evolved from being a start-up to becoming a scale-up company. Our products have progressed from the development phase into commercial solutions that are now actively used and requested by the market. Behind this development lies extensive engineering work and a strong focus on building products that truly make a difference for our customers. It is very rewarding to see that effort now translating into strong demand and increased customer satisfaction.

Many railway companies are looking to invest in sensor technology for their locomotives and wagons to improve operational efficiency and extend the lifespan of rolling stock. At the same time, a large portion of existing fleets lack modern systems for continuous condition monitoring. Our sensors can be installed on both new and existing vehicles, enabling digital capabilities without extensive modifications or new acquisitions.

The same logic applies to infrastructure. The Swedish railway system has long been characterized by underinvestment in maintenance, with many components approaching—or already exceeding—their technical lifespan. This creates a strong need for better decision-making data. With our sensors, both operators and infrastructure owners gain a clearer view of actual conditions, can detect deviations earlier, and plan interventions before issues lead to disruptions.

At the core, we enable a more proactive way of working. Instead of reacting only after a fault has occurred, our customers can use data to understand trends over time, prioritize the right measures, and use maintenance resources more effectively. This shift—from reactive to data-driven, condition-based, and preventive maintenance—is exactly what the railway industry needs.


Can you describe the background of the procurement RMD won in autumn 2025, the role of PMU:C, and how you view market interest going forward?

The procurement that RMD won in autumn 2025 originates from the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority’s report following the derailment in Iggesund in 2023. The incident occurred when an embankment collapsed, and due to insufficient position data, it took emergency services 45 minutes to locate the train.

Since then, the importance of positioning data has increased—particularly in passenger traffic—where operators want to be better prepared if the worst were to happen. This is where our PMU:C plays a key role by transmitting position data directly to Trafikverket, which in turn shares it with emergency services. In the event of an accident, responders know exactly where to go.

In addition to positioning data, PMU:C measures ride comfort, settlement, speed, and performs dead reckoning, allowing position tracking even during temporary data gaps, such as in tunnels. Recently, we have also seen increased interest in comfort measurements, particularly from passenger train operators aiming to improve the travel experience.

We are also seeing strong interest in measurements related to settlement and wheel flats. There has long been a debate between railway operators and infrastructure owners regarding responsibility in cases of damage or derailments. Operators often point to infrastructure deficiencies, while infrastructure owners highlight vehicle-related wear and tear. By collecting objective data from vehicles, a clearer, fact-based understanding of events can be established.

Over the past few months, we have issued quotations for approximately 150–200 PMU:C units to customers, corresponding to annual revenues of SEK 3–4 million, and we see strong potential for continued growth in demand.

While Sweden remains our primary market, we are seeing clear and growing international interest. Companies from around the world are reaching out for quotations or more information. In the past month alone, we have had direct contact with companies in Liberia, Portugal, Brazil, Turkey, the UK, and the United States.

In addition, we continue to see strong demand for our rear-view camera—currently our most popular product—as well as our weight sensor, both of which hold significant future potential.


What are the key competitive advantages of RMD’s products?

Our main competitive advantage is that no other company offers the same end-to-end solution as we do. We develop both hardware and software in-house and can tailor the solution to each customer’s needs. For customers seeking a complete solution, we manage the entire chain—from data collection and hardware installation to data visualization. At the same time, we can also deliver data only, for customers who prefer to integrate it into their own systems.

Another key advantage is that our products do not require any permanent modification to locomotives or wagons. Unlike many competing solutions that involve drilling or welding, our devices are installed using magnets. This makes them easy to mount, relocate, and remove. This is particularly valuable for customers who lease rolling stock, as they can use our products without making permanent alterations or seeking approval from the owner.

Our business model is also a strength. We offer our solutions as monthly subscriptions, as we deliver more than just a physical product—we provide an ongoing service. The software is updated remotely, allowing us to continuously improve functionality and add new features based on customer feedback. If a unit is damaged, we quickly send a replacement, and the customer returns the defective unit for repair. This ensures a high level of service, which has been highly appreciated by our customers.


Is there any particular solution that is in especially high demand right now? What is driving that interest?

We have seen very strong demand for our weight sensor this spring, both in Sweden and internationally. At the same time, we have continued to refine the product through real-world testing in operational environments.

One particularly impressive aspect is the sensor’s precision. In one test, a wagon was loaded with approximately 60 tonnes, and the sensor could still detect the difference when a person weighing around 95 kilograms stepped onto the wagon. This demonstrates the high sensitivity and accuracy of the solution, even in demanding railway environments.

In practice, the weight sensor functions as a digital scale for railway wagons. It measures load weight and can also detect uneven load distribution (imbalanced loading). This enables real-time visibility during loading, allowing operators to optimize weight distribution, avoid overloading, and reduce operational risks.

A common issue is that operators load below maximum capacity for safety reasons but still report and pay based on maximum load. In practice, only about 80–85% of capacity is utilized. With our sensor, they gain precise data on actual loads, enabling better capacity utilization and clear financial benefits.

The weight sensor is also a key component of RMD’s broader digital ecosystem. Since it identifies the wagon’s position within the train, it enables automatic wagon identification and train composition. Together with our other systems, this allows for fully digital and automated handling of train data, reducing manual work and minimizing human error.

This is also a core part of our Automatic Train Departures (ATD) concept, which streamlines processes such as wagon registration, weight reporting, and departure procedures, making operations faster, safer, and more data-driven.


As regulations and requirements tighten—for example from the Swedish Work Environment Authority—how are customer needs changing, and what does this mean for our business?

When development of our rear-view camera began, the focus was primarily on efficiency and cost savings. The goal was to simplify and improve shunting operations by giving the driver better visibility when reversing.

Over time, however, the product has taken on an increasingly important safety role. Traditionally, shunting staff often ride on the last step of the wagon to maintain visibility and communicate with the driver via radio—an inherently risky practice that has led to numerous serious accidents over the years.

RMD’s rear-view camera provides a safer alternative by giving the driver real-time visual access to the rear of the train. This reduces the need for personnel to be physically exposed in dangerous positions.

As authorities increasingly move to restrict such practices, demand for safer, technology-driven solutions is growing.

For RMD, this represents both a strong business opportunity and a chance to contribute to a safer railway industry. The rear-view camera is not just a tool for efficiency—it is a solution that can fundamentally improve working conditions and safety standards across the sector.
