New Tests of Railway Metrics and Dynamics’ Rear-View Camera System with a U.S. Class I Railroad
In December last year, a major U.S. railroad conducted an initial test of our rear‑view camera. Now, the same company has requested two additional units from Railway Metrics and Dynamics for further testing.
The rear‑view camera is an important tool for improving safety and streamlining switching operations. The international interest we’re seeing—especially from a leading Class I railroad—demonstrates the value of the product, says Jan Lindqvist, CEO of Railway Metrics and Dynamics.
Multiple Advantages with RMD’s Rear‑View Camera
Switching operations are a core part of daily work for rail operators, and RMD’s rear‑view camera eliminates several high‑risk moments in the process. The camera also increases operational efficiency by providing the locomotive engineer with live video directly in the cab or on a portable display. This allows the engineer to complete the entire switching procedure alone without compromising safety.
Equipped with AT&T SIM Cards for New Tests
The cameras now being delivered will be equipped with AT&T SIM cards, enabling the units to connect directly to AT&T’s mobile network in the United States. The SIM card identifies the device on the network and ensures stable connectivity for data transfer, remote monitoring, and other network‑based functions. AT&T operates one of the country’s largest networks, providing strong coverage and reliable communication even in high‑traffic areas.
About Class I Railroads
In the United States, freight railroads are categorized based on annual revenue. A Class I railroad is defined as a company with annual operating revenues exceeding 504.8 million USD (2023 threshold), according to the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB).
These companies handle a significant share of the nation’s long‑haul freight and operate across large geographic areas with their own terminals and infrastructure.
